چکیده

We describe a coagulation model that leads to the rapid formation of superEarths and the cores of gas giant planets. Interaction of collision fragments with the gaseous disk is the crucial element of this model. The gas entrains small collision fragments, which rapidly settle to the disk midplane. Protoplanets accrete the fragments and grow to masses & 1 M⊕ in ∼ 1 Myr. Our model explains the mass distribution of planets in the Solar System and predicts that super-Earths form more frequently than gas giants in low mass disks. Planet Formation around Stars of Various Masses: Hot Super-earths

We consider trends resulting from two formation mechanisms for short-period super-Earths: planetplanet scattering and migration. We model scenarios where these planets originate near the snow line in “cold finger” circumstellar disks. Low-mass planet-planet scattering excites planets to low periastron orbits only for lower mass stars. With long circularisation times, these planets reside on lon...

Rapid Formation of Super-Earths around M Dwarf Stars

While the recent microlensing discoveries of super-Earths orbiting two M dwarf stars have been taken as support for the core accretion mechanism of giant planet formation, we show here that these planets could also have been formed by the competing mechanism of disk instability, coupled with photoevaporative loss of their gaseous envelopes by a strong external source of UV radiation, i.e., an O...

Core Formation in Giant Gaseous Protoplanets

Sedimentation rates of silicate grains in gas giant protoplanets formed by disk instability are calculated for protoplanetary masses between 1 MSaturn to 10 MJupiter. Giant protoplanets with masses of 5 MJupiter or larger are found to be too hot for grain sedimentation to form a silicate core. Smaller protoplanets are cold enough to allow grain settling and core formation. Grain sedimentation a...

Origin and Ubiquity of Short-Period Earth-like Planets: Evidence for the Sequential-Accretion Theory of Planet Formation

The formation of gas giant planets is assumed to be preceded by the emergence of solid cores in the conventional sequential-accretion paradigm. This hypothesis implies that the presence of earth-like planets can be inferred from the detection of gas giants. A similar prediction cannot be made with the gravitational instability (hereafter GI) model which assumes that gas giants (hereafter giants...

The Formation of Super-Earths and Mini-Neptunes with Giant Impacts

The majority of discovered exoplanetary systems harbour a new class of planets, bodies that are typically several times more massive than the Earth but that orbit their host stars well inside the orbit of Mercury. The origin of these close-in super-Earths and mini-Neptunes is one of the major unanswered questions in planet formation. Unlike the Earth, whose atmosphere contains less than 10−6 of...
